1/35 Tamiya German Field Kitchen & British Infantry

This represents one of my few attempts at really trying to tell a story in a diorama - albeit quite a simple one.

The Field Kitchen was the older Tamiya incarnation of this kit which came with horses though alas lacking harness. Trying to make this (from stained paper) proved laborious and I neglected to add buckles which detracts from the final effect too much now I think. Otherwise this is a nice little kit with plenty of extras in the form of food containers, a ladle and knife, dishes etc.

Once I saw the potential for a story here it was relatively simple to convert the driver figure into a surrendering pose: just by replacing the arms.

The British Infantry set I think is excellent with convincing figures and faces full of individual character. Of these, I only changed the left arm of the one reaching out to the horse - the others fitted the story of an unthreatening surrender pretty well. Weapon slings were made from old cement tube foil.

Paints used were all Humbrol enamels - good enough for my crude brush painting. Only the horses were finished with oils as they give a bit of texture and a nice sheen.

The base was some plastic thing I found among kitchen rubbish. I covered it in a thin coat of plaster, real dirt, and with garden moss and other small bits and pieces of vegetation.

Somehow, almost by accident, this turned out one of the most appealing dioramas I've ever done.
