The Tasca version of the Sherman Vc seems to get generally rave reviews and my experience building this kit would corroborate those opinions. It went together very well with plenty of options and detail and excellent fit throughout. The tank commander came with the kit and the driver is an Ultracast head on a generic figure. Logs, added track armour and some stowage is Verlinden resin. Canadian decal markings are also Ultracast products.
This was my first foray into armour building in many years and, because of the excellent quality of the materials used, was probably a good choice. Paints used were mostly Testors Model Master, some Tamiya acrylics and Vallejo for the figures. Weathering was diluted painters’ oils over a coat of Future, applied as blended dot filters, general washes and selected pin wash areas. I used artist oils to weather the flexible rubber track also, and this seems to have come back to bite me later on. About six months after completion I noticed that the track was separating in a couple of places while under absolutely no stress. I can only guess that it has something to do with the oil paints and Taltine odourless thinner that I used. (The repair with superglue seems to be holding.)
The rust, mostly on the track-shoe
armour, is real rust. I keep pieces of steel wool in various stages of rusting to provide a variety of rusty hues and apply it as dust, or with water or Micro Flat as a binder. To some eyes the rust effect is a little heavy handed but I like it….I’ll call it artistic license. Mike Scullion |
